Let’s spend a (worthy) word about – Vans ft. Liberty

What can I say? I am totally in love of Vans from…basically ever. And now, what came out from the collaboration with Liberty House is something really special: Continue reading Let’s spend a (worthy) word about – Vans ft. Liberty

Let’s spend a (worthy) word about – Trainers

I have never been the “girly” type. When I was a child my mother used to send me to the hair stylist once a month to get my hair cut really short, even if I always tried to avoid it and let my hair grow long like my sisters’. In fact I used to be a real tomboy! Style improvement apart, I have not changed much over the years, and the little tomboy girl I used to be is still inside me.

However, despite the fact I still have pretty short hair, like every girl I like to wear high heels sometimes, or a skirt rather than the usual trousers. Actually, what I really like is to mix male clothes with female items: the chioce is wider and the results on my look are, in my opinion, much more interesting than they would have if I was wearing only womanly clothes.

And this is why, when I read magazines, I go around the city taking pictures of people or I browse on the internet, my attention is mainly (but not only) focused on this kind of style.

Lately I find really interesting the so called “sporty-chic” style, a well studied mix of classic female elements with some others more “sporty” and comfortable. Shoes, for instance: trainers with a shapeless dress, an A-line or pencil skirt, combined with an oversized top, are becoming really popular and, for me, the new way to improve my favourite look.

I think I will give to my old and beloved Vans Old Skool another chance!

Let’s spend a (worthy) word about – Menorquinas

My friend Susana is Basque and lately she keeps sending me picture of the Menorquinas, some shoes she is really into. The Menorquinas, called aslo Avarcas, are the typical shoes from the spanish Isle of Menorca (or Minorca) originally used by the shepherds and farmers of the island. I was not totally aware of them before, but now that Sus’ enthusiasm about these shoes came to me also I notice that they are actually becoming popular even here in London, where there are no shepherds and, let me say that, there is not the kind of weather that gives you the chance and the need to wear Menorquinas all the time.

Anyway, long story short: because of my friend, my recent short holiday in Barcelona and my extreme need of real Summer, I am into avarcas too. Because they are made by basic things (rubber sole, upper shoe open on the toe, made with cow or pig leather), these shoes are affordable, but at the same time they have good quality and they are comfortable.

So, despite the London’s weather I got my own white Menorquinas from Barcelona and I am really happy of this purchase! And if you have no chance to go to Spain there are a lot of websites from which you can buy them, but also you can go to Topshop, River Island or Urban Outfitters that, as I said, are beginning to sell them too.

Now we just need some proper sun and we can all wear Menorquinas everyday!

Let’s spend a (worthy) word about – Miriam Van Weeghel

I saw the shoes that the Dutch graduated at ARTEZ Institute of Arts, Miriam Van Weeghel, created for her own brand and I have to say that I am impressed. I HAD TO write something about her and her creations!

She is now teaching Fashion Design and History but at the same time she creates new shoes. My favourite: the Bunker Boots that she made for her Graduation Collection.

We still do not know much about her, but for sure we like what she does!

Let’s spend a (worthy) word about – Volta footwear

Volta Footwear SS13

As an obsessive-compulsive shoes addict as I am, I am always looking for nice and particular shoes. I once saw some Volta shoes in Milan back in 2010 and from that moment I knew that this footwear brand would become one of my favourite ones.

And I had all the reasons to keep an eye to Volta, because currently it actually still is a brand that produces very good shoes.

Born in 2008, the italian shoes Volta are now becoming quite popular, thanks to their high quality and a really singular aesthetic. Coming from a “urban” background, Volta shoes are made for the busy lifestyle of the city, where walking, rushing and sometimes also running are a priority, that have to match with a stylish appearance.

Initially and mainly made for men, from the last season is been created a women’s collection that brings in itself the Volta’s soul but that also pays more attention to the latest trends, for a smart and fashonable woman.

More single parts set the whole thing – Segmented shoes

They are an hybrid between a proper shoe and a sandal, for some you can just say that “there is something missing”, but it is always on purpose.

My latest obsession are segmented shoes, a genious and fresh way to re-invent “winter” and classic shoes, such as ankle boots and Oxford shoes. Like some art works in Surrealism and Abstractism where you need to look at the whole thing to see the real image, this kind of shoes are made just by listings and outline, empty spaces wisely connected by straps, transparent plastic, vinyl or pvc…but still you can see their “original” shape, if you look at the whole shoe.

I like the idea, plus you can wear and show nice socks…just to add a trend to another (see The detail that makes the difference – Knee Socks).

Let’s spend a (worthy) word about – L’F Unisex

lf unisex3

Behind the enigmatic name of the brand L’F Unisex there is a simple but unique concept. I want to explain it through the same words that the two designers used to describe this brand: L’F is Made in Italy. L’F is Unisex. L’F has Vibram sole. L’F has no laces and no tongue.

L’F is in fact the acronym of Licia (L) and Francio (F), italian designers and a couple in life and business. Together they created in 2010 their own perfect shoe, the classic brogue with…something new: ‘Our goal is to have a high quality Italian product with irony and an original twist. Our shoe is a brogue model redesigned to be used without shoelaces and tongue as a pair of mocassini’.

After their success at Pitti Uomo in 2012 the L’F Unisex was back in Florence last week with a new, exciting collection of shoes. To us it seems the perfect answer for the upcoming season.

First thing to do next time we go back to Italy: buy a pair of L’F Unisex!

Designer of The Month – Depression

depression1

Despite the name, what these guys create season by season is anything but depressing. And they actually choosed this name on purpose: as we read from their bio, Kenny Lim and Andrew Loh, a Singapore duo, ‘Depression was born to combat ‘depression’ [by the corporate struggle] through the creation of pieces that are always entertaining and never depressing’.

Each collection, presented with a medical theme, is exciting, unique and, of course, far from being depressing. What I like more about Depression’s products? SHOES! Amazingly out of the ordinary, I have been pleasantly stunned by their AW12 shoes collection, now available at solestruck.com.

Definitely Depression is for those who don’t want be depressed.
